GIS Needs Land Surveyors

GIS is commonly used by organizations around the world to manage land (real estate) and infrastructure. It is this particular application of GIS that can most benefit from the involvement of land surveyors. Land surveyors have the expertise to improve GIS applications for land and infrastructure. This expertise includes:

  • The ability to measure accurately on the surface of the earth.
  • An understanding of real estate law.
  • An understanding of land use planning and land use regulation.
  • An understanding of civil engineering design.
  • An understanding of architectural design.
  • Experience supporting the construction and monitoring of physical infrastructure.
  • The ability to evaluate spatial data accuracy.
  • Practice collecting metadata.
