Our volunteers are guided by a joint mission and set of operating principles. All of our volunteers also agree to adhere to a simple code of conduct.
Mission
At GIS 4 LI, we have a simple, three-part mission:
- Increase the involvement of land surveyors in GIS for critical applications with a focus on real estate and heavy infrastructure.
- Provide a set of open technology standards and open-source software tools for GIS professionals working with real estate and infrastructure.
- To enable more effective collaboration between land surveyors, civil engineers, and GIS professionals.
Operating Principles
- GIS 4 LI is a meritocracy. We give power to those willing to take action. Hard work is required. We don’t have patience for facade volunteers that want to add filler to their LinkedIn profiles.
- When we must choose between action and inaction, we will err on the side of taking action.
- We believe technology standards should be open to all – not just a privileged few.
Code of Conduct
Our of our volunteers at GIS 4 LI adhere to the following simple code of conduct:
- We recognize that many applications of GIS do not require the involvement of land surveyors to be beneficial.
- We recognize that GIS professionals have the right to practice their profession for non-critical applications that don’t endanger public health and safety.
- We believe the public is protected when land surveyors are involved in critical GIS applications for real estate and heavy infrastructure.
- We will educate the land surveyors, GIS professionals, and the public about the dangers of GIS for critical applications based on inaccurate data – especially inaccurate location information.
